COMP4040: Module Timetable

31st January : Session
01: Introduction to the module
In the first session we will be looking at the different software tools
that we will use to engage in activities to support your learning by
building your confidence in the use of the tools and techniques and allowing
you to discover for yourself the characteristics of "good web design".
7th February : Session
02: Assessment Criteria and methodologies
In the second session we will:
- check that we can use WebCT;
- derive some web site evaluation criteria and evaluate some web sites;
- take a first look at our criteria for achieving the module learning
outcomes;
- look at the design tools we might use to aid the design process e.g.
Flowcharts and Story Boards;
- remind ourselves of the design cycle and some of the theoretical models
which we might use to design a web site;
- get started on answering the general questions on our wiki ;
14th February : Session
03: Further grade criteria and rationales
In the third session (which will take place on-line) we will:
- create a preliminary set of grade criteria for the second learning
outcome and further adapt the grade criteria for the first learning outcome.
- start to develop a rationale for claiming a particular level of achievement
in the first learning outcome, linking this to examples of work on your
blog and any other sources.

- do some further work on some of questions about web design on the top
page of the wiki
21st February : Session
04: Grade criteria and rationales revisited
In the fourth session we will:
- review what has been done over the last week;
- evaluate our set of grade criteria for the first and second learning
outcomes and reach a concensus about them
- further develop our rationale for claiming a particular level of achievement
in the first learning outcome, linking this to examples of work on our
blog and any other sources.

- familarise ourselves with Dreamweaver and build some simple web pages
28th February : Session
05: An introduction to CSS
In the fifth session we will:
- review what has been done over the last week;
- evaluate our set of grade criteria for the second learning outcomes
and reach a concensus about them;
- further develop a rationale for claiming a particular level of achievement
in the second learning outcome, linking this to examples of work on our
blog and any other sources;
- introduce simple CSS and build some simple web pages using it;
7th March : Session
06: Further CSS
In the sixth session (which will take place on-line) we will:
- take a look at the concepts of usability and accessibility and make
some judgements about whehter web pages are useable and accessible;
- further develop a rationale for claiming a particular level of achievement
in the second learning outcome, linking this to examples of work on our
blog and any other sources;
- take a look at further CSS relate it to usability and accessibility
and build a simple web site using it;
Please note that you have two weeks to do this work and catch up on previous
work before we meet again after learning week.
Week beginning 13th March : Learning Week
Please note that there will be no taught session this
week.
21st March : Session
07: Consolidating CSS
This week we will look at positioning on the screen. Static, Absolute,
Relative and Fixed Positioning. Floating elements and the Z-Index. Designing
without tables using the box model.
28th March : Session
08: More CSS
This week is an opportunity to consolidate our ideas about CSS and pick
up on some of the issues we have not completed fully in the first half
of the module. We will also take a further look at the assignment.
4th April : Session
09: Learning outcomes and rationales re-visited
This session introduces looks again at learning outcomes and our rationale
for demonstrating their achievement
Two weeks beginning 10th April : Easter break
Please note that there will be no taught session over
these two weeks.
25th April : Session
10: Usability and accessibility
We will look at how our web sited that we have produced are usable and
accessible
2nd May : Session
11: Assignment Tutorials
Here you will be given the opportunity to discuss your assignment.
